Certificate in Alcohol & Drug Counseling Program
Delaware State University is offering CADC credits through the Department of Psychology. Courses may be taken for recertification as well and are held evenings and online to accommodate working professionals and feature 8-week accelerated courses. The offered courses will include core areas critical to new providers as well as a variety of special topics to keep more-seasoned providers abreast of the best practices and emerging trends in alcohol and drug counseling. All courses fulfill required Psychology and free elective credits in the DSU bachelor of psychology program.
To be eligible for the International Certification & Reciprocity (IC&RC) Certification Examination, candidates must have:
- 300 hours of education credits (45 credits per course offered)
- Introduction to Alcohol and Drug Counseling
- Assessment of Alcohol & Drug Addiction
- Alcohol & Drug Counseling II
- Treatment Planning & Relapse Prevention for Alcohol & Drug Addiction
- Professional, Legal & Ethical Responsibilities for Alcohol & Drug Counselors
- Special Topics for Alcohol & Drug Counseling - Topics Vary
- 200 hours of supervised work or practicum experience
- Employment hours
- Bachelor’s degree - 2 years needed (4000 hours; 100 weeks)
- Master’s degree - 1 year needed (2000 hours; 50 weeks)
- For the certificate in Alcohol and Drug Counseling (CADC), applicants also must pass the IC&RC examination for alcohol and drug counselors.
- Certification must be renewed every 2 years. Forty hours of recertification credits are required.
